OVERVIW OF THE DEPARTMENT
Department of Ophthalmology was established in 2002 in S. Nijalingappa Medical College, Hangal Shri Kumareshwar Hospital and Research Centre.
The Postgraduate courses were started – M.S. Ophthalmology in 2011. Presently the Department has recognition for intake of 5 M.S.Ophthalmology candidates.
Our department has separate spacious consultation rooms with all necessary equipments in each room. There is a separate room where visual acuity testing and refractive error measurement are being done by trained staff. OPD has a separate Minor OT for minor procedures like chalazion removal, lid suturing, sub conjunctival injection etc.
The operation theatre is equipped with Carl Zeiss Operating Microscopes, Appasamy microscopes with imaging system , Alcon Phaco System and Geuder posterior vitrectomy system.
The department has the majority of the diagnostic and surgical tools necessary to provide complete eye care, from routine eye examination to the most complicated cases in the subspecialty areas of pediatric ophthalmology, retina, uvea, cornea, glaucoma, and squint.
The Department carries out many research activities both as a part of post graduate dissertation work and independent research projects.
Free eye check up camps are conducted from time to time under which cataract surgery is done for free. School screening, glaucoma awareness program are also conducted on regular basis.
Our department also has Eye bank to propagate the awareness about Eye Donation and to restore vision in Corneal Blind persons. It encourages students to participate in community outreach, spreading knowledge about how donations can change lives. Keratoplasty surgeries are done on a charitable basis
