In this era of unrest, competition, frustration, natural calamities etc, psychiatry, with its emphasis on humane & compassionate approach, has gained importance as a branch of medicine. Our hopes and vision rest upon the scientific advances and research which have added greatly to our understanding of human behavior and ability to modify it. The department attempts to proceed with a rigorous approach appropriate to the sophistication of today’s students & higher academic standards set in our college.
Department of Psychiatry started since the inception of college in 2002. It got permission to start post-graduate course in 2013 with intake of two MD seats per year. In 2020, the number of post-graduate seats got increased to three per year. With the inclusion of outpatient and inpatient services, the department also provides various services as mentioned below;
- Therapy: Modified ECTs are regularly administered to indicated patients.
- Specialty clinic: Following specialty clinics are run regularly in the department of psychiatry, namely Neuropsychiatry Clinic, Child Guidance Clinic, Family counseling Clinic, Psychomotor Clinic, De-Addiction Clinic, Geriatric and Memory Clinic.
- Psychological & IQ Testing: Clinical Psychologist in the department of psychiatry regularly administers psychometric tests - IQ testing, Projective tests, Personality test, and Neuropsychological tests daily. Psychological treatment like Jacobson progressive muscle relaxation therapy, Motivation Enhancement therapy, Cognitive Behavior therapy, supportive therapy and other psychotherapy are carried on patients regularly.
- Bio feedback: Bio-feedback treatment is carried out regularly in the department to the indicated patients using computerized bio-feedback machine.
- Facility for care and stay of Acute cases (Emergency case): Acute cases are initially kept in isolation room for the urgent treatment. Later they will be transferred to respective wards.

Objectives
- To provide basic knowledge of psychiatry for undergraduate medical students, by clinical training in interview, diagnosis, and management of common psychiatric disorders.
- To train our undergraduate students as per the latest guidelines under Competency Based Medical Education (CBME).
- To motivate our students towards self-awareness and awareness of social responsibilities so that they become better doctors.
- To teach the students to strike a balance between “Compassionate Concern and Dispassionate Objectivity” in whichever field of medicine they take as specialty.
