Departmental Information

Overview of the department

Department of Community Medicine was formally established in 2001 in the institute. Since its inception, it has been one of the key departments for the institute. It aimed to develop a feasible pattern of healthcare delivery for the population. The department also sought to provide community health orientation to various activities of the institute. The department started MD Programme in 2009.

The department is been playing a significant role in the control of pandemic of COVID 19 and also started vaccination centre for the general public.

The department of Community Medicine is primarily located in the college building, equipped with research laboratory space in ground floor and a laboratory in the 1st floor for teaching undergraduates and postgraduates.

The department is involved in the following activities:

  1. Teaching and training

It includes UG and MD courses. The department is also involved in training of various categories of health care professionals/ workers as well as education of general public.

  1. Community Health Service

The department provides comprehensive health care to population of nearly 50,000. The services in the form of two health centres

    1. Urban Health Training Centre covering population of 20,175
    2. Rural Health Training Centre covering population of 29,825.
  1. Research and Development

The department has made a significant contribution in research and development.

  1. Teaching and training of Indian Medical Graduates and postgraduate students
  2. Preventive, promotive and curative services to the needy at rural and urban slum areas
  3. Updating public health knowledge and skills among the staff of Community Medicine
  4. Research and innovation

The penultimate mission of the department is to keep every individual healthy and to produce skilled health care professionals.

  1. Urban Health Training Centre:

The department caters urban slum population of around 52,268 with just 4 km away from the college near Shishuvihaar School, Bagalkote.

Services offered: OPD, IPD Day-care, basic hematological and biochemical tests, Health Education activities in the field, health camps;

Days observed:

  • Monday: Antenatal Care OPD;
  • Tuesday: Routine Day care and field activities;
  • Wednesday: Family Planning Counseling; 
  • Thursday: Immunization;
  • Friday: Geriatric OPD
  • Saturday: Routine Day care and field activities;
  1. Rural Health Training Centre:

The department caters rural area population of around 37,651 situated around 15 km away from the college in Shirur, Bagalkote

Academic activities:

Both undergraduate and postgraduate classes are conducted in accordance with CBME NMC guidelines.

Undergraduate

  • Theory classes, Small Group Learning/Teaching, Self-Directed Learning and revision classes including seminars along with clinico-social case presentation and discussion and solving public health problems for undergraduates followed by formative and summative assessments.
  • Family Adoption Programme activities as per CBME NMC guidelines are followed

Postgraduate

  • Theory classes, Seminars, Journal critique, field activities, family case and clinico-social case presentation and discussion, solving public health problems in depth and pedagogy including public health labs and dissertation writing for three years for postgraduates followed by formative and summative assessment
